April is a beautiful month. The days are getting longer, flowers are blooming, and we’re finally shaking off the cold weather. But as a parent, I’ve also come to associate April with something much more significant -- National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It's an important time to raise awareness, have tough conversations, and offer an invitation to get involved.
National Child Abuse Prevention Month was established in 2003 by Prevent Child Abuse America to bring attention to the issue and to encourage communities to support families and prevent abuse before it happens. It’s not just about reporting or reacting, it’s about helping to build strong families and safe environments where children can grow up loved and protected. One initiative that works hard to shine a light on this cause is Brightpaths’ Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign.
What is Brightpaths?
Located at the intersection of S Barnett Shoals and Research Drive in Athens, GA, Brightpaths is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting local families and promoting early childhood resources. They offer programs that include parent education, seasonal safety series, in-home support for new families, and much, much more. Take a look:

Get Your Pinwheels
During the month of April, pinwheels are planted in visible spots throughout our community to raise awareness and promote involvement. Brightpaths annually participates in the national Pinwheels for Prevention campaign by offering blue pinwheels for $1 (along other items like signs, magnets, and coloring sheets) for those who participate in the campaign. Stake them in your yard by your mailbox, share with neighbors and friends, or create a "pinwheel" garden in your front yard when you get a few! Every dollar goes towards the effort of creating strong families throughout Athens and beyond. So, now I'm challenging you to get involved today. P.S. Pay it forward and invite a friend!
