Originally founded in 2021 by Lora Smothers, Joy Village School is a non-profit organization seeking to educate and uplift the youth of Athens by celebrating Black culture and history. After taking a brief hiatus in 2023, Joy Village returns to the community seeking to continue their positive impact through various hands-on initiatives.

Mission and Vision:
Joy Village School aims to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and supported. The organization envisions a community where children can freely learn and grow joyfully, and takes pride in fostering opportunities for life-long friendships to be discovered and real-world situations to be navigated.
Working hard to create a safe and nurturing space for children, Joy Village School seeks to help students develop not only academically but also socially and emotionally.
Community-Centered Learning:
Joy Village's School is deeply rooted in the belief that education should extend beyond textbooks and classrooms. Using a community-centric approach, the school encourages students to engage with their surroundings and understand the world through diverse perspectives. This holistic approach ensures that students not only excel in their studies, but also teaches compassion, critical thinking and reasoning skills.

Parents and families are also considered integral parts of the school community. One of Joy Village School's core values is rest instead of nightly homework assignments. They believe in reserving after school hours for quality family time and good ole fashioned child-led, play-based learning.
